Consultation with Children and Young People with SEND
Teachers/SENCO and Support Staff will work with children and young people to identify the support needed to meet agreed outcomes. The provision is planned and interventions are allocated to individual needs. The children take an active role with setting their outcomes and discussing them with the class teacher/SENCO. The children have regular meetings with staff to discuss their progress and support.
We value and celebrate each child being able to express their views on all aspects of school life. This is usually carried out through the School Council which has an open forum for any issues or viewpoints to be raised.
Children who have a Support Plan discuss their targets with their Class Teacher / SENCO. There is an annual pupil questionnaire where we actively seek the viewpoints of children and find out how they feel about life in school.
If your child has an EHCP (Education Health & Care Plan) or Statement of SEN, their views will be sought before any review meetings. The review will be child centred and your child will be supported to share their views in the meeting; this can be via photographs on boards. slideshows, pictures, writing and by talking. This is usually around the themes of ‘What I have enjoyed this year ‘, ‘What I would like to get better at’ ‘What I am looking forward to’ What do other people say about me?’ ‘Who are my friends?’ Children as young as 5 have contributed very successfully in this way
The SENCO will work with all outside agencies that are involved in the welfare of your child.

Consultation with parents and carers of children and young people with SEND
We are committed to working with parents and carers to identify their child’s needs and support. Parents and carers will be involved throughout the process.
There is a range of ways this can be done, for example:
- Termly parents/ carers evenings;
- Ongoing discussions with a class teacher and/or SENCO;
- An ‘open-door’ policy, where parents and carers are welcome to come into school to discuss any concerns they may have;
- Through regular reviews of their child’s SEN Support Plan/ EHC Plan.
We believe that your child’s education should be a partnership between parents and teachers, therefore we aim to keep communication channels open and communicate regularly, especially if your child has complex needs. Sometimes, we operate a home / school link book which your child will bring home regularly so that comments from parents and teacher can be shared and responded to when needed, this ensures that we can also work together and there is a constant line of communication.
If your child is on the SEN register their Support Plan will have individual targets. This is sent home on a termly basis and parents are invited should they wish to talk through the targets. The targets set are SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time scaled) targets with the expectation that the child will achieve the target by the time it is reviewed. If your child has more complex SEND they may have an Education Health Care Plan, which means that a formal meeting will take place to discuss your child’s progress and reports are regularly written.
Parents/Carers are welcome into school at any time to discuss their child’s needs or to discuss any concerns they may have, although making an appointment would ensure there is enough time for discussion with all relevant staff.
